To Rule or Not to Rule?

Samuel developed an interest in board games this summer. He likes to play any and all games that we have in the cupboard. Unfortunately, he is still a little unclear on the idea of rules. For the older games (scrabble, monopoly, life, chess, etc) we allow him to make up rules and follow his lead (as confusing as it is). However, Candy Land seems like a good game to learn some rules and the ups and downs of winning and losing. We know he understands the concept and what is supposed to happen. The first few times we played he seemed excited when another person won. But, lately he goes to extreme measures to make sure he wins. His most common approach when he realizes he is going to potentially lose is it to make up random rules that only apply to him. Somehow I have to go back or lose a turn but the same rule doesn't apply to him. This morning he actually stacked the cards so he got all the good cards and I had to go back. Hum...
