We're all winners

Last weekend we all headed to Fresno for the Annual West Coast MCC Sale. We started the sale festivities bright and early for the Run for Relief. This year we all participated in the 2 mile run/walk. Samuel had such a good time. He ran for about 1 mile, walked another 1/4 mile, rode in the stroller another 1/4 mile, and then following in his dad's footsteps sprinted the last 1/4 mile. Oliver happily rode in the stroller. The 2 mile does not award "winners" for best time. Rather, each person guesses their time and whoever is closer is declared the winner and given a small medal.

Well, apparently, somewhere during the run, grandma Claassen told Samuel that we were all winners in this race. So, when they started announcing the winners and handing out medals Samuel clearly expected to get one. When it was over and he did not get a medal, he burst into tears, you know those huge crocodile tears that break your heart. When I asked what was wrong, he said, "I thought we were all winners". Why do we have to teach winning and losing at age 4?

The rest of the sale was great fun as always. Highlights included:
  • Watching the auction. First Mennonite Church submitted a quilt (I stitched about 3 stitches) and got $1,300 for it! Yippee. I think that is a church record.
  • Eating copious amounts of fritters. Samuel discovered he can just lick the outside and enjoy huge amounts of pure sugar. Oliver quickly followed suit.
  • Playing with the water pumps. Oliver was fascinated with these pumps. Funny thing is we have a picture of Samuel at the sale 2 years ago (in the same shirt as Oliver) fascinated with the pumps. Guess 20 months is prime pump age.

  • Lunch with great grandma & great grandpa
  • Catching up with folks we only see once a year
We spent the rest of the weekend in Fresno mainly watching Oliver play with the Claassen's dog. Oliver is seriously in love with dogs (and older men). We took long videos of the dog because Oliver watches our home videos for hours and hours reliving each moment with as much joy as the first time.

Kevin, Oliver, and I came back home while Samuel stayed at G&Gs for another 3 nights. Parenting only 1 child deserves its own post...
