It has been a long few days. On Friday Samuel went to the doctor thinking we had an allergic reaction to the amox he was taking for his ear infections. The doctor looked and looked at the rash and then declared he had scabbies. Yikes. Scabbies are these little mites that burrow in your skin. The body reacts to the poop left by the mites and becomes red and itchy. I was assured it was no reflection on the cleanliness of Samuel or our house! "Kids just get funny things," said the doctor. Oh, and his ear infection had not cleared up yet.
So, we covered Samuel in this lotion and set about washing everything in the house. All linens, pillows, clothes had to be washed. Good thing is the house feels really clean now.
Well, Samuel went to spend the weekend with G&G Claassen. When he returned he was not exactly rash free. Tuesday he continued to itch , had a mild fever still, and his sick mood had come out in full force. By Wednesday he was a mess. He was itching everywhere. He finally said, "mommy make the itching stop".
Off to the doctor we went. She looked at his rash even longer. She then decided to take a strep culture. Sure enough, he tested positive for strep and was declared to have Scarlet Fever. Apparently, sometimes the strep bacteria manifests itself in a body rash rather than your throat. Samuel got two big shots in the butt and some benadryl and we were on our way.
Thankfully he woke up much better this morning. We are still out of school but at least we are much happier and non-itching! Let's hope this solves the problem. Oh, and the doctor said the scabies was a misdiagnosis--I guess we can look at the positive and be happy the house got well cleaned!
